FLIES AND MAGGOTS
(Musca domestica)

Flies and maggots are another great food for insectivorous lizards and are easy to get in the warmer months of the year, although, you have the problem of odour, so this feeder insect is not a very popular choice to culture.
There are two ways to provide your animals with flies and or maggots, the first is to catch them or the second choice is to culture them yourself. Trapping flies normally involves either a bait based on raw meat or something that has a strong smell to attract the flies. Although this is a pretty gruesome set-up it will work very well especially in summer when a lot of small lizards are being born or hatching.

METHOD:

Culturing flies is done very much the same way, as you would culture fruit flies, just on a slightly larger scale!

Cultures tend to have a very much stronger smell i.e.  more rancid!

Fly and Maggot Diet:

Diet 1:
(non stinky media) low-smell recipe is water & Kefir 50:50 add bran till it has a fruit fly medium consistency, add a little sugar and some yeast.
Kefir can be found in the dairy dep. in health food store, can be substituted with yoghurt.

Diet 2:
Mix one part rancid milk and three parts dried cat pellets, add some sugar and yeast, this mixture should not be wet just moist. Keep moist by adding sugar water. (Warning this stuff stinks as the culture ages)
