| This
chapter deals with the basic and common feeder insects used when keeping
Dendrobatid frogs and other small herps. |

Fruit Flies: This
is by far the most staple food of dendrobatid frogs. Two species are
cultured frequently: D. hydei and D. melanogaster.
Crickets: The House Cricket (Acheta domestica) is a proven and nutritious food for many
herps.
Springtails: Springtails(Collembola) are minute, wingless insects about 1/16 to 1/8 inch (1 to 2 mm) long.
Flour Beetles: The larvae are the preferred food for the small frogs such as dendrobates and
mantellas, fish, and small lizards.
Meadow plankton: "small insects that live in the grass or other areas of your
yard."
Wax Worms: These worm or grubs are the larva from a moth that invades beehives, especially weak or old hives. Wax worms are a good food source to fatten up frogs.
| Aphids: Aphids are sap-sucking insects that can be found on a very wide range of plants, and are one of the most common pests to attack garden plants. They are more commonly known as "greenfly" or "blackfly". |
